The park covers an area of 104 sq. km. and offers great panoramic views of hills, valleys, lakes and urban landscapes. The forest consists of South Indian moist deciduous and semi-evergreen trees.SGNP has a rich diversity of flora and fauna, with more than 1100 species of plants, 250 species of birds, 40 mammalian species, 150 species of butterflies and more, making it a biodiversity hotspot as well as a readily accessible natural space for hands-on ecological education.

Shilonda Trail:

This quiet and peaceful trail begins along the plains just before the Kanheri foothills. An erstwhile tribal settlement originally from these parts resettled elsewhere to allow the wilderness to reclaim its stake. As you move along the trail, one can see the gradual gradation in the forest vegetation: from a scrub like forest at the beginning to sturdy, tall, evergreen vegetation ahead. This trail is one of the most pleasurable walks as it crisscrosses through a small but rapid forest stream at many points and wading across this knee-deep, crystal clear water is nothing less than therapeutic for the urban soul. This stream also offers amazing opportunities to encounter a myriad of life forms amidst priceless solitude. If you do have time on your hands, explore the complete trail. Your legs may complain a bit, but your mind and soul will be very relaxed and appreciative!

Itinerary:

Meet at Sanjay Gandhi National Park main gate at 7 AM.

Transfer to the Nature Information Center (NIC) within SGNP for a short introductory session, viewing of the 3D model of SGNP, and guided session in the butterfly garden with the wildlife expert and leader for this trail.

Transfer to the base of Kanheri Caves to start the trail by 8.15am.
