Tree Plantations

Due to the ever-increasing encroachment of the Park by slums and high-rise buildings alike, the forested area of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) is gradually reducing in size. In order to reverse this process, FWCS along with the Gaia Conservation Foundation, in association with the Forest Department, has been conducting eco-restoration work on the eastern fringes of SGNP through participatory plantation drives and education programs for the locals of Mumbai.

Native plants are carefully selected based on various parameters such as local climate, availability of water, soil fertility and existing native vegetation. Healthy saplings of 4-5 feet in height are procured from nurseries. Pits of 1×0.5 feet are dug and a minimum distance of 8 feet is maintained between the saplings. Pits are dug 30-40 days before plantation drives.

Individuals and groups can get involved in these plantation drives. If you are interested in making your city greener and ensuring the survival of SGNP, please use the Enquiry Form to indicate your interest and we will get in touch with you.
