About Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP):

Sanjay Gandhi National Park is a unique national park with the distinction of being the largest park in the world to be located within a teeming metropolis. The park covers an area of 104 sq. km. and offers great panoramic views of hills, valleys, lakes and urban landscapes. The forest consists of South Indian moist deciduous and semi-evergreen trees.SGNP has a rich diversity of flora and fauna, with more than 1100 species of plants, 250 species of birds, 40 mammalian species, 150 species of butterflies and more, making it a biodiversity hotspot as well as a readily accessible natural space for hands-on ecological education.

Manpada Forest Trail:

The Manpada Trail is located in the Thane district in the eastern part of Sanjay Gandhi National Park. It is a most unique haven for biodiversity and with the advent of the monsoon, the forest is a sight not to be missed! Take in the soothing yet buzzing sights of the green forest, ephemeral plants, wild lilies, colorful bugs, spiders, praying mantises, grasshoppers, beetles, the unique calls of various birds, monsoon cicadas and crickets.

Itinerary:

  • Meet at the main gate of Nisarga Parichay Kendra, Manpada near Tikunjiwadi,Thane. at 7 AM.
  • After a brief introductory session at the start of the trail at 7.30 AM, visit the butterfly garden to observe and learn about the diverse range of butterflies and insects in the Park.
  • Enjoy the dense forest and its inhabitants until 11.00 AM when the guided walk will conclude.

Things to carry:

  • Adequate water and refreshments.
  • Caps, full-sleeved shirts and track pants.
  • Mosquito repellent.
  • Binoculars, camera (not compulsory).
