Trek to Highest Point of Sanjay Gandhi National Park

 

About Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP):

Sanjay Gandhi National Park is a unique national park with the distinction of being the largest park in the world to be located within a teeming metropolis. The park covers an area of 104 sq. km. and offers great panoramic views of hills, valleys, lakes and urban landscapes. The forest consists of South Indian moist deciduous and semi-evergreen trees.SGNP has a rich diversity of flora and fauna, with more than 1100 species of plants, 250 species of birds, 40 mammalian species, 150 species of butterflies and more, making it a biodiversity hotspot as well as a readily accessible natural space for hands-on ecological education.

Highest point:

“Jambulmal’ is considered to be the highest point in Mumbai at a staggering height of 468 meters (1535 ft) above sea level. Enveloped by dense forest in the core area of SGNP, the trail is 2.5km from the gate of Kanheri Caves.
The trail is ideal for beginner trekkers and wildlife enthusiasts. At the top of Jambulmal, one will get a view of the Tulsi and Vihar lakes as well as a panoramic view from Powai to Dahisar.

Itinerary:

  • Meet at Sanjay Gandhi National Park main gate at 7am.
  • Transfer to the Nature Information Center (NIC) within SGNP for a short introductory session, viewing of the 3D model of SGNP, and guided session in the butterfly garden with the wildlife expert and leader for this trail.
  • Transfer to the base of Kanheri Caves to start the trail by 8.15am. Complete the trail around 12pm and transfer to the main gate of SGNP by vehicle.

Things to carry:

  • Adequate water and refreshments.
  • Caps, full-sleeved shirts and track pants.
  • Mosquito repellent.
  • Binoculars, camera (not compulsory).

Included in the cost is: Park entry fees, all forest permissions,Transfer from Main gate to Kanheri and back,expertise charges.
